OpenClaw or Hermes Agent: which to choose and how to run each one on Hostinger

If you don't want to look after a server, Hostinger's managed plan serves both at the same price: US$3.99/month with the referral link, on a 24-month plan. The software is free in both cases; what you pay for is the server and the use of AI models.

OpenClaw and Hermes Agent are open-source AI assistants, under the MIT license. You install them to run on your own and chat through Telegram, WhatsApp or another messaging app. The license costs nothing; what differs is the interface, the memory and who maintains the project.

OpenClaw is maintained by the OpenClaw Foundation, a non-profit organization. According to the official README, its state, memory and credentials stay on the equipment where it runs, and the project has no paid plan, hosted service or token. It has a web interface (Control UI), a command line and native apps for macOS, iOS, Android, Windows and Linux. On Hostinger it can be bought managed or as a VPS, as shown in the OpenClaw managed or VPS guide.

Hermes Agent is built by Nous Research, a company that develops AI models. Its difference is the learning loop: the agent organizes its memory across sessions, creates and improves its own skills, searches old conversations and models the user with Honcho. It has a full terminal and Hermes Desktop, a desktop app with installers for Windows and macOS. The project page states no price for the software. It mentions Nous Portal, a subscription with tools such as web search, browsing and image generation, with no amount given. Nous Portal is one way to pay for the model, not the only one.

The table gathers what the primary sources say. The comparison that OpenClaw publishes about Hermes was written by the project, not by us: the rows that come from it carry that name in the source column.

Both have a scheduler and subagents, so that does not separate them. The difference lies in OpenClaw's channels and interface, and in Hermes Agent's memory, which learns from use.

The software costs nothing in both cases. The real spending comes from three places:

• Server. It can be your own computer, switched on all the time, or a VPS, a rented virtual server. The VPS gives you root access, full control of the machine, but you are the one who updates and protects the system. The more RAM, the more programs run at once without slowing down.
• Managed plan. Hostinger installs, updates and maintains the assistant. OpenClaw and Hermes Agent are on the same plan, “AI automation apps”.
• AI model. The assistant asks a model for its replies, such as Claude, GPT or Gemini, which charges for its use. There are two ways to pay: your own API key, where the provider bills you directly, or AI credits bought at Hostinger. Managed OpenClaw and managed Hermes Agent come with a starting balance; top-ups do not appear on any public page, so check the panel. On Nous Portal, the price is not stated on the project page.

Server and plan prices sit in a single table, in the chapter Where to run it on Hostinger, further down. The monthly cost of model use is not stated in the sources: it depends on the model chosen and the number of conversations. That is why this guide gives no estimate of a monthly total.

Both are open source and charge no license. The choice depends on what you want the agent to do, not on the software.

• You want many channels and a phone app: OpenClaw. The README mentions more than 20 channels and ships native apps for phone and computer, besides the Control UI on the web.
• You want an agent that learns from use: Hermes Agent. It organizes its own memory, creates and improves its own skills, and searches old conversations.
• You want root access and other programs on the same server, such as a website or n8n: VPS, with either one. Root is the administrator account, with full control of the server.
• You don't want to install or look after a server: managed, for both. Hostinger installs and updates.

Nobody on the team uses either one. The profiles come from the projects' documentation, not from our own experience.

Before you start, confirm three things. They apply to both agents.

• AI model. The agent does not answer on its own: it asks a model from another company for replies. On Hostinger, you use the plan's AI credits or your own API key, the key the program uses to talk to the provider. The provider charges for that use, directly to you.
• A messaging channel. Telegram is the simplest route. You create the bot in BotFather, Telegram's official bot for creating bots, and keep the token. WhatsApp joins as a linked device, by reading a QR code.
• Who looks after the server. On managed, Hostinger updates and maintains security. On the VPS, updates are yours, through the Update button in Docker Manager, and so is server security. Docker is the program that runs each application isolated in its own container.

If you install OpenClaw yourself, with npm, it requires Node.js 24.16 or newer, or 26.1 or newer. Versions 22, 23 and 25 are not supported, according to the project's security policy.

The security policies of both projects say who the agent was built for. Read them before you decide how to expose it.

• OpenClaw (SECURITY.md in the openclaw/openclaw repository): built for a trusted operator, not for several people who don't know each other. Anyone who can talk to the agent can make it use its tools. For more than one person, the project recommends one server per person. Don't expose the gateway directly to the public internet. Plugins run in the same process and are treated as trusted code, so install only what you know.
• Hermes Agent (SECURITY.md in the NousResearch/hermes-agent repository): built for a single person. Don't expose the gateway to the internet without a VPN, Tailscale or a firewall. Run the agent as a user without root privileges, and review third-party skills and plugins by reading the code, not just the SKILL.md file.

Prices for 24-month plans, read on October 21, 2026. In the table, the managed plan covers OpenClaw and Hermes Agent at the same price. The Black Friday campaign changes the amounts, so confirm them in the cart.

On managed, the plan comes with a starting balance of AI credits, and whatever goes beyond it is charged by usage. On the VPS, Hostinger installs the assistant with Docker, and the server's updates and security stay with you.

The managed plan has a 30-day refund window. On the VPS, the 30 days apply only if your last VPS refund was requested more than 180 days ago.
